Christian Faul, PhD
Grants Review Committee

Dr. Faul is a tenured Associate Professor in the Division of Nephrology and in the Department of Cell, Developmental and Integrative Biology and the Director of the Section of Mineral Metabolism at University of Alabama at Birmingham. He is an NIH-funded cell biologist with over 20 years of experience in studying pathomechanisms of kidney and heart diseases, and he has published over 60 peer-reviewed manuscripts. A major focus of his research is on the effects of phosphate and its regulators, FGF23 and klotho, in chronic kidney disease (CKD) and aging. Dr. Faul is the editor of the first textbook on FGF23, and he is the Co-Chair of the first Gordon Research Conference (GRC) that is focused on phosphate metabolism held in February of 2023. He has served on various NIH study sections for grant applications from established investigators as well as trainees. As a basic scientist in a department of medicine, and with most of his research projects linked to clinically relevant problems, his laboratory provides a platform for young researchers to perform translational research. Dr. Faul has a strong dedication to train the next generation of translational scientists and to attract young talent to the field on kidney-related research. He has served on various ASN committees where he presented the views of PhD scientists. In his laboratory, he has trained several postdoctoral research fellows, graduate students and undergraduate and visiting students, many of whom have received fellowships from the NIH/NIDDK, the AHA and international funding organizations.
